Job Description:
The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department (MAE) at Syracuse University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the field of Built Environment, starting in Fall 2024.

Prospective candidates should possess a proven track record in Built Environment, with an ability to establish a robust research program capable of securing competitive external research funding. The department is particularly interested in individuals engaged in both fundamental and applied research within the expansive domain of Built Environment. Potential emphasis of research areas should encompass, but are not confined to one of the two focus areas:

1. Advanced materials and technologies for the built environment such as: 1) Smart materials that are tunable at nano-scale for environmental sensing, air purification, and thermal management and regulations for human-centered building energy and environmental systems (e.g., Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for moisture and gaseous pollutant adsorption and detection, metal oxides for environmental sensing, cool or super cool coatings for solar and thermal radiation controls on building surfaces (walls, windows and roofs), tunable phase change materials for reducing the thermal loads and regulations of heat transfer and storage in building systems, and novel materials of solar energy harvesting and conversion; 2) Enabling technologies that are critical to the development of intelligent building energy and environmental systems (e.g., air purifications for multiple indoor pollutants (PM, VOCs, and bio-contaminants) with low flow resistance, high-efficiency cold/very cold climate heat pumps, high-efficiency heat exchangers for energy recovery, integrated energy POD for heating, cooling, ventilation and domestic water supplies, and wearable and personal environmental control technologies; 3) Bio or plant-based materials and systems for air purification, building assembly and enclosures, and thermal and/or visual environmental controls; 4) Optimal design and integration of the advanced materials and enabling technologies for buildings and communities.
2.
Human factors and human-machine/system interfaces such as 1) Relationships between the physical environmental conditions (thermal, air quality, lighting, acoustic and visual) and the physiological and psychological responses of occupants and how they impact occupant's productivity and creativity; 2) Methods for measuring and modeling the environmental conditions, human responses, and performances; 3) Exposure pathways of people to various pollutants in the built environment (organic and inorganic gases, particulate matters and bioaerosols including viruses, fungus and bacteria); 4) Methods for measuring and modeling the exposures and the associated health risks; and 5) Human-technology frontier (e.g. Virtual reality/Augmented realty, wearable sensing) and its role in affecting the environmental quality, energy efficiency, occupant's comfort, health, satisfaction, productivity and creativity in buildings and communities.

Qualifications:
  • Candidates should have a Ph.D. degree in a relevant area of Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.

Job Specific Qualifications:

Responsibilities:
  • Address instructional requirements in the fields of materials, built environment science and technology, and mechanical engineering, spanning both undergraduate and graduate levels.
