Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Under the general supervision of the Bike Shop Coordinator, the Lead Mechanic will be responsible for organizing the day to day technical and repair aspects with the student mechanics of the A.S. Bike Shop. The Lead Mechanic implements the training for student employees, outlined in the AS Bike Shop training manual, to student employees for the repair and maintenance of a wide range of bicycle types and other rolling stock. Responsible for ensuring staff's adherence to safety standards in all repair procedures. Will endeavor to maintain the A.S. Bike Shop in accordance with its mission statement to provide high quality bicycle repair and safety education to the student, faculty, and staff of UCSB.


Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent experience
  • 1-3 years Bicycle maintenance and mechanic functionality
  • 1-3 years Technical skills and resources for repair and problem solving on a variety of bicycles.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Must possess a broad knowledge and technical aptitude related to bicycle maintenance and mechanic functionality.
  • Must be able to communicate about processes clearly and effectively to customers and staff in a fast paced work environment.
  • Ability to complete mechanical tasks left uncompleted by Student Mechanics.
  • Knowledge of inventory control, systems and storage related to merchandise stocked within the Bicycle Shop.
  • Understanding or experience with community based bicycle spaces.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
  • 60% Technical and Training Responsibilities - The A.S. Bike Shop Lead Mechanic must have technical skills and resources for repair and problem solving on a variety of bicycles. Must possess knowledge of bicycle industry and of technical innovations as well as expertise on a wide range of bicycle types and rolling stock. Gives advice and assistance to students, faculty, and staff customers on bicycle repair, parts, maintenance and safety as appropriate. Performs repairs and oversees Student Bike shop Coordinator in the training program for Bike Shop employees on technical skills at levels of expertise as established in conjunction with the Bike Shop Coordinator and involving but not limited to: names of all parts and perform counter service, changing of tubes and tires, adjusting hubs, bottom brackets and headsets, derailleur and brake adjustments, complete bicycle tune-up, cable replacements, spoke replacements and truing, overhaul all bearing surfaces, wheel building, complete overhaul, multi-speed internal hubs. Advises customers and employees on appropriate tools and equipment needed to maintain their bicycles. Supervises repair work assuring quality control of the jobs performed. Determines methods of repair service techniques. Resolves customer complaints. With direction from the Bike Shop Coordinator, tracks the daily repair tags from initial customer authorization through the final transaction. Sets priorities in completing daily repairs, assigns appropriate student mechanics to each repair to ensure that repaired bicycles leaving the shop are in safe operating condition. Ensures that all student employees and customers understand appropriate safety measures for all technical and mechanical work performed, as defined by the Bike Shop training manual and Bike Shop Coordinator.


  • 40% Special Projects - Under the direction of the Bicycle Shop Coordinator, the Lead Mechanic will further develop a transition plan for the AS Bicycle Shop's relocation. For the AS Bicycle Shop's successful relocation the Lead Mechanic will troubleshoot and problem solve questions related but not limited to spatial organization, building workflow, inventory storage, equipment research and procurement. The Lead Mechanic will create and share documents that outline the AS Bicycle Shop's inventory, shop supplies, and other AS owned equipment that will be relocated to the AS Bicycle Shop's new home. The Lead Mechanic will continue to engage with the AS Bicycle Shop's Construction Committee and AS Bicycle Shop Coordinator regarding budget and construction timeline. As well as any necessary meetings pertaining to the successful completion and transition of the new AS Bicycle Shop. The Lead Mechanic will conduct research pertaining to the anticipated future brought upon by the E-bicycle industry. This market is expected to grow and complicate the offerings of the AS Bicycle Shop. The Lead Mechanic will outline and develop service policies for e-bicycles. It is expected that the Lead Mechanic will conduct this research in consultation with the AS Bicycle Shop Coordinator, student mechanics and administrative staff.
