Position Summary
The Entry-Level Mechanic, under the direct supervision of the Fleet Manager, is responsible for maintaining and/or repairing all University Vehicles. These vehicles may be gasoline and/or diesel motors.
This position is considered a Responsible Employee under Title IX federal regulations and Mandatory Reporter under Texas state law and The UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy. As a Mandatory Reporter this position requires you as the employee to promptly report any incident that you witness or receive information about violating Title IX. These reporting responsibilities are set out in the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Description of Job Duties
-Perform all line maintenance as required for satisfactory operation of the vehicle to include: periodic checks on tires, oil, gasoline water, grease, points, plugs, brake shoes, exhaust systems, lights, safety equipment, and steering systems;
-Perform minor and major mechanical repairs;
-Assist in maintaining vehicle records;
-Report and consult with Master Mechanic on major repair problems;
-Operate tools and equipment according to prescribed safety procedures;
-Help maintain the shop in a clean and orderly manner;
-Assist in annual safety inspection of all school buses;
-Correct unsafe conditions in work area, and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately;
-Maintain accurate record of time and materials required to perform repairs and service;
-Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles;
-Required to drive a school bus as needed;
-Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Fleet Services
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
-Knowledge of auto parts and terminology;
-Possess skills to perform major engine repairs and/or overhauls;
-Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose electrical and mechanical issues;
-Ability to use a personal computer and office equipment;
-Capability of using automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drills, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jacks, and lift equipment;
-Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures;
-Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA
Required Education
High School Diploma or its equivalent
Required Work Experience
-Three (3) or more years of experience as an Entry-Level Mechanic;
-Experience in repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel operated trucks, golf carts, cars, and/or buses
Preferred Qualifications
Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
-Possess current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Technical Certificates;
-Possess and maintain current Class B Commercial Drivers License with appropriate endorsements of P & S
Work Hours
M-F, 8am 5pm
Physical Demands
-Mental Conditions: Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and written), concentrate, reason, understand verbal instructions, analyze, differentiate, memorize, read, coordinate, compile, compute, and maintain emotional control under stress;
-Physical Demands: Ability to lift and/or carry heavyweight (45 pounds or more), stand, walk, balance, crawl, stoop, kneel, crouch, pull, push, reach, perform repetitive hand motions, hear, speak, possess visual acuity, driver moderate distances, travel moderately, work around moving objects or vehicles, may work prolonged or irregular hours. Expose to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel.
